<br />
This was just a quick project that I did so that I could have a pretty way to store my makeup brushes. I was inspired by the way Sephora displays their makeup brushes in stores. They put them in plastic containers with glass beads. I wanted to do the same.<br />
<br />
<b>What You Need:</b><br />
<ul>
<li>Glass container ($1 from Micheal's)<b> </b></li>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0050ZNWYG/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0050ZNWYG&linkCode=as2&tag=itoyose-20">Clear bead vase filler</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=itoyose-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0050ZNWYG" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
($5 from Micheal's)</li>
<li>Makeup brushes</li>
</ul>
<br />
<b>What to Do:</b><br />
<br />
This project literally took seconds. All you do is pour the beads into the container, and then stick your makeup brushes in vertically. They should stand upright. Now you can display your brushes and there's no chance of the bristles getting damaged! It is also very convenient to have them out on top of my dresser when I'm putting on my makeup, instead of having to get them out of a bag.<b> </b>

Before I went to college, I knew that I wanted to get some cozy and cute pillows to adorn my bed. What better way to add decoration (and function) to an otherwise bland room? I had already chosen my dark purple comforter, so I wanted pillows that fit in with that color scheme. Here is what I came up with:<br />
<br />
<u>Birds on a Line</u><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWf8N4-z3M0qE67AC0tzhtrWMUOIuY434W9GW4s9yb7tIH1fLo2tXCYYddcKm_7gxmhnOGf4FDi_Bc5q-oAhfIRChrTahltBart8Jt6yJv3VeeBuYzqbvpvmdB9l_HnhNfjaezcCZ-tZk/s1600/DSCN2233.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWf8N4-z3M0qE67AC0tzhtrWMUOIuY434W9GW4s9yb7tIH1fLo2tXCYYddcKm_7gxmhnOGf4FDi_Bc5q-oAhfIRChrTahltBart8Jt6yJv3VeeBuYzqbvpvmdB9l_HnhNfjaezcCZ-tZk/s400/DSCN2233.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
This long bird pillow was inspired by <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/sukanart?ref=pr_shop_more" target="_blank">Sukan</a> pillows that I saw on Etsy. I used:<br />
<ul>
<li>Different colored felt sheets</li>
<li>Black embroidery thread</li>
<li>Grey fabric</li>
<li>Pillow stuffing</li>
</ul>
And here's what I did:<br />
<ol>
<li>Draw a bird shape onto an index card, and cut it out to use as a pattern.</li>
<li>Cut out different colored birds from the felt.</li>
<li>Cut out two rectangles of the grey fabric, and leave seam allowance.</li>
<li>On the back of one rectangle, draw three horizontal lines and mark off 1/2 inch internals.</li>
<li>With the embroidery thread, stitch on each interval for even stitches. <u> </u>Use all 6 strands of thread.</li>
<li>Turn the pillow over and place the birds. Have fun and try different arrangements!</li>
<li>Pin the birds in place and topstitch around the edge using matching thread.</li>
<li>Place both grey rectangles right side together and sew around the outside, leaving an opening on bottom.</li>
<li>Flip right side out, and fill with pillow stuffing. Close the opening with a topstitch.</li>
</ol>

The other pillows that I made were much simpler. I found this really nice cotton fabric that incorporated all of my colors. To make these two smaller pillows, I just cut out squares of the fabric, and did the last two steps of the last pillow. Super fast and super easy to make! I got custom pillows for my dorm room that matched my decor and did not break the bank!<br />

<a href="http://www.sherlockology.com/ImageGen.ashx?image=/media/157037/irenes-shoes2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="113" src="http://www.sherlockology.com/ImageGen.ashx?image=/media/157037/irenes-shoes2.jpg" width="200" /></a>I first saw Louboutin shoes when I was watching BBC's Sherlock. It was the episode with Irene Adler ("A Scandal in Belgravia"), and I thought that they were so cool. However, the original shoes cost around $800, which is about as far out of my price range as you can get. So, after doing some research, I decided that I would make my own. It turns out that Mr. Louboutin first painted the soles of shoes red with nail polish, so I did the same.<br />
<br />
<b>What You Need:</b><br />
<ul>
<li>Heels of your choice</li>
<li>Rubbing alcohol </li>
<li>Masking tape</li>
<li>White nail polish</li>
<li>Red nail polish</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkA9jDIY2fWOfSK-k-N4UeA6JHUb6dHDDVN1Oo5i0_xub6Hdwp_cXWb4JIcqkf5qhgwdtGEcCL6465t-J-G6HgUP-MWDBUuW5jQ31N_q_fDhT2ZoTasONyHppgowrLsLF7BT6WdqAjR7M/s1600/supplies.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkA9jDIY2fWOfSK-k-N4UeA6JHUb6dHDDVN1Oo5i0_xub6Hdwp_cXWb4JIcqkf5qhgwdtGEcCL6465t-J-G6HgUP-MWDBUuW5jQ31N_q_fDhT2ZoTasONyHppgowrLsLF7BT6WdqAjR7M/s320/supplies.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Step 1:</b> Clean the soles of the shoes with rubbing alcohol. This will remove any dirt or grease particles.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Step 2:</b> Put masking tape around the edge of the soles, so that no nail polish will get on the actual shoe. For areas with sharp curves, I found it best to just use small pieces of tape that overlap.<br />
<br />
<b>Step 3: </b>Paint one coat of white nail polish. I used the most inexpensive nail polish that I could find at Target (Sinful Colors "Show Me White). This coat of white is necessary so that the actually color that you want isn't distorted by the shoe sole color.<br />
<br />
<b>Step 4: </b>After the white nail polish is completely dry, paint the soles with two coats of the red polish. I used Sally Hansen's "Cherry Red" polish.<br />
<br />
<b>Step 5: </b>Let dry completely, and then peel off the paint. You might have to do some touch-ups near the edges. Enjoy!<br />
<br />
Obviously, you don't have to make these look like Louboutin shoes; you can't paint them any color you want! I've heard of brides painting the soles of their shoes blue as their "something blue." Whatever you choose, have fun!

Like many of the past projects that I've been doing, this one is inspirered by a post that I saw on Pinterest. This one comes to you from <a href="http://cheltenhamroad.wordpress.com/2012/07/11/paint-chip-calendar-tutorial/">Welcome to Cheltenham Road</a>. I decided to do my own take on it and use colors that I liked. Here's my tutorial<br />

<b><i>What you need: </i></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>A poster frame (mine is 18" by 24" from the Christmas Tree Shoppe for $6)</li>
<li>A poster board ($0.64 from Michaels)</li>
<li>Paint chips (free from the Home Depot)</li>
<li>White erase markers ($1.50 from Five Below)</li>
<li>Print-outs of the days of the week</li>
<li>Scissors</li>

<i style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i style="font-weight: bold;">Step 1:</i> Trim the poster board so that it is the same size as your frame.</div>

This craft was also inspired by <a href="http://www.abeautifulmess.com/2012/06/his-her-sharpie-mug-diy.html">this post</a> that I saw on Pinterest by A Beautiful Mess. I wanted to make a customized mug with which to drink my tea this September. I really liked the simplicity of the Sharpie on the white mug and the drawn-on teabag. Here's my version.</div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Tutorial</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><i><b>What You Need: </b></i>a white mug (I got mine from the Christmas Tree Shop for $1), and a Sharpie marker</span></span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx5ns0bCKzON4TQj85-AIAsDDzYYtv_Ea6RhvfITdVcpzqRT2x70ayXxt2Z1TdY3tA_q2rz6YN_iREsmEEik1iLJ8vEFkg_oa9mCKWEO3ffX99GOTMsp6iNaEv_xf86r1fPciAsZlVuc8/s1600/mug_sharpie_edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx5ns0bCKzON4TQj85-AIAsDDzYYtv_Ea6RhvfITdVcpzqRT2x70ayXxt2Z1TdY3tA_q2rz6YN_iREsmEEik1iLJ8vEFkg_oa9mCKWEO3ffX99GOTMsp6iNaEv_xf86r1fPciAsZlVuc8/s400/mug_sharpie_edit.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i><b>Step 1: </b></i>Draw your design on the mug. This is where you can be creative. I'm a fan of quotes, so I chose to write a quote by C. S. Lewis that reads: "You can't get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me." I also drew the tag of the tea bag like on the inspiration mug.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhky9WzvPAhqS8OYP8HE53nwpI81fYh15S1sR4kux5ZTpIpTYJI9vsgBiGI_5dA1DHkgzLT1dQWmVjOCQjsw-NcBgmoyDZwYFYlH6Djr2qMBXO1Vvb_83ASRxg8IUFz17Dh0DffC8GKKIw/s1600/mug_front_edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhky9WzvPAhqS8OYP8HE53nwpI81fYh15S1sR4kux5ZTpIpTYJI9vsgBiGI_5dA1DHkgzLT1dQWmVjOCQjsw-NcBgmoyDZwYFYlH6Djr2qMBXO1Vvb_83ASRxg8IUFz17Dh0DffC8GKKIw/s400/mug_front_edit.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilZc6x5YXXzZY-q6dWABRHFFs4cDiMd8J-IrDPFnL_weIsRuPLgnbaF1UAad2MLcGtTpmuW_OtNCJXG-OAmS87aJ0uJvwpaMZGqct4IHqIT57N9Q6mDwv9x4IJoaC9Z3k6r_MxnPymGmU/s1600/mug_back_edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilZc6x5YXXzZY-q6dWABRHFFs4cDiMd8J-IrDPFnL_weIsRuPLgnbaF1UAad2MLcGtTpmuW_OtNCJXG-OAmS87aJ0uJvwpaMZGqct4IHqIT57N9Q6mDwv9x4IJoaC9Z3k6r_MxnPymGmU/s400/mug_back_edit.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i><b>Step 2: </b></i>Bake the mug in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. After it is finished, let it cool in the oven, because it will be <u>very</u> hot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmsQ1CDGPxwmCS-soXjL7KOkpQRBIYLuh6EEgXE9Q5XOC9DIZzpTJXqTRtxY_KuWcnCSyv24JTxFsvia2saucMUz41cG9InEJnzYxOm7PxHkMOhuWEuoQiHk6SAqSYQxPOfGK_8z3it9g/s1600/mug_in_oven.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmsQ1CDGPxwmCS-soXjL7KOkpQRBIYLuh6EEgXE9Q5XOC9DIZzpTJXqTRtxY_KuWcnCSyv24JTxFsvia2saucMUz41cG9InEJnzYxOm7PxHkMOhuWEuoQiHk6SAqSYQxPOfGK_8z3it9g/s400/mug_in_oven.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's all there is to it! I would recommend hand-washing the mug just to ensure that the design stays on. Sharpie markers are not actually meant to write on glossy surfaces like mugs. If you want the design to stay on better, invest in an actual ceramics marker. However, for a $1 investment, I'd say that this is pretty good.</div>

I decided that I wanted to make my own to hang in my dorm room.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">First I used large canvas that I got in at Micheal's and painted it with rainbow splotches. You can really paint any background you want.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFkGaoSdatu2Whsj5Nt9t8C_tWmUV_wdKc5_Lg6aCeiZOqs0YvT55gFMm19YOEBoRjKNwO6HMrvUEmTAusq9Sl21AIQYCi2WXRKXbtyaGpkJzMmstLp3UnYIE9gXVZK-3JXdyDP9xARZI/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFkGaoSdatu2Whsj5Nt9t8C_tWmUV_wdKc5_Lg6aCeiZOqs0YvT55gFMm19YOEBoRjKNwO6HMrvUEmTAusq9Sl21AIQYCi2WXRKXbtyaGpkJzMmstLp3UnYIE9gXVZK-3JXdyDP9xARZI/s320/photo+1.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Then, I chose my quote and cut out the stickers that I need. My quote is, "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imaged" by Henry David Thoreau. After I placed the stickers, I drew guidelines on the canvas and stuck them on.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2PFfF68a9EENBgKFtEYz6PZIdLdwnUtCyAgm93-uzPi5IWeHr5zs1JWf2m8SxK1zXFaMNpU-_KvkoH-SvPbBS6KTF-Ftil7F2RiFyah_zS19HQ3wefFkwXPGTVdoh3o59_NpU3lXfvtI/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2PFfF68a9EENBgKFtEYz6PZIdLdwnUtCyAgm93-uzPi5IWeHr5zs1JWf2m8SxK1zXFaMNpU-_KvkoH-SvPbBS6KTF-Ftil7F2RiFyah_zS19HQ3wefFkwXPGTVdoh3o59_NpU3lXfvtI/s320/photo+2.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">After I made sure the stickers were down securely, I poured white paint all over the canvas.</span><br />

<br />
I really wanted a pair of TOMS shoes for the summer, but they are way out of my budget. Luckily, I found a pair of these <a href="http://www.target.com/p/Womens-Mossimo-Supply-Co-Leva-Canvas-Flat-White/-/A-13747687#?lnk=sc_qi_detailbutton" target="_blank">Toms look-a-likes at Target</a> for only $17. I didn't like the bright white, though, so I decided to dye the shoes with tea. The inspiration for this project comes from <a href="http://sweet-verbena.blogspot.com/2011/06/another-shoe-makeover.html" target="_blank">Sweet Verbena</a>.<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Courier New',Courier,monospace;">Tutorial</span></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<b><i>You will need:</i></b> white canvas shoes, tea, and Sharpie markers.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8VsCvj3yR-_gG152sl1uaVYMiSN7WzBBH3VGy-rZ3NYoi7Xrt4GYdiSFkc4m-ZG5k0aXTjBPamSn_SaeVHTrzTI_GW_V-3jOWd0wvUYbSNtILNbK4f-aCj5yFOSZpY4qC3d90SPeNYVs/s1600/DSCN1411.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8VsCvj3yR-_gG152sl1uaVYMiSN7WzBBH3VGy-rZ3NYoi7Xrt4GYdiSFkc4m-ZG5k0aXTjBPamSn_SaeVHTrzTI_GW_V-3jOWd0wvUYbSNtILNbK4f-aCj5yFOSZpY4qC3d90SPeNYVs/s400/DSCN1411.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<b><i>Step 1:</i></b> Remove the inserts from the shoes. You do not want these getting wet when you dye your shoes.<br />

<i style="font-weight: bold;">Step 2: </i>In the sink, run your shoes in water. If the fabric is wet, it will absorb the dye more readily. Set shoes aside.<br />

<i style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></i>
<i style="font-weight: bold;">Step 8: </i>Decorate as you wish with a Sharpie marker (optional). I tested this and didn't like how it turned out, so I wished that I had left the shoes as they were. This led to a whole debacle, and eventually I ended up painting the part with the Sharpie.<br />

<br />
So there you go! Simple summer shoes that look like Toms, but at the fraction of the price. Something that I learned during this project: if you like how something looks, just STOP working on it. Less is more. I should not have tried to decorate the shoes with Sharpie, and eventually tried to recreate what the shoes looked like before. If I had just stopped, I would have been saved all that time and effort.<br />

The dress is finally finished! After much work (and blood, sweat, and tears) I was able to wear it to the fashion show and prom. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJEmOVXnmVfe5x0AYf6jDLESgOcq2FCSIXmnjnEcx3qzBfTjGXcOYt_l5sicKs-MtITUD1wgXYs_iMz9Gmt0xQeE8TU50P8SY0EEieXkKfvHyG1xDFinHGeUm9JqaKu4gpSRvDzTRD16c/s1600/DSCN1336.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJEmOVXnmVfe5x0AYf6jDLESgOcq2FCSIXmnjnEcx3qzBfTjGXcOYt_l5sicKs-MtITUD1wgXYs_iMz9Gmt0xQeE8TU50P8SY0EEieXkKfvHyG1xDFinHGeUm9JqaKu4gpSRvDzTRD16c/s320/DSCN1336.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
On the bodice and the skirt there are two layers of fabric: emerald green organza over glittery emerald green satin. Both are from Joann's Casa Collection. The glitter satin is exposed on the waistband. By far, the hardest part of completing the dress was putting the gather in on the organza. The fabric kept on fraying and slipping.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn3wvxT9ZdlQ0NSLQYx_9OJHzzd3ZclWwKKBSEdpUgiDOgzwzR2smexlgXZ64Dj34IcmsD68rucwYjUn9fhodyeabygEByLBt685Ob4_fnt67yJBIbKcdMT5-GwfSX7z9bexS4iKawGxA/s1600/DSCN1334.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn3wvxT9ZdlQ0NSLQYx_9OJHzzd3ZclWwKKBSEdpUgiDOgzwzR2smexlgXZ64Dj34IcmsD68rucwYjUn9fhodyeabygEByLBt685Ob4_fnt67yJBIbKcdMT5-GwfSX7z9bexS4iKawGxA/s320/DSCN1334.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
After the dress was completed, I decorated the waistband. I added square gemstone trim that I also purchased from Joann's. There wasn't enough of it in stock to do two rows around the entire dress, so I just put the two rows on the front. The decorative gem piece in the middle of the waistband was actually taken from another dress that I own. I just cut it off and sewed it onto my prom dress.<br />
<br />

The prom theme was "Masquerade Ball", so I also decided to make this masquerade mask. I made it out of aluminum foil, newspaper, paper towels, a chopstick, and paint. That was made last minute, so I think it would have been more ornate if I just hadn't decided to use household items. It's good enough for a free mask! I used <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBelIutha-8" target="_blank">this video</a> for directions.<br />

All in all, I was very proud of how my dress turned out. It was such an accomplishment to finally make a formal dress. While I may not be attempting it again in the near future, it's good to know that I can do it if I have to. Sewing is underway! Last week over President's Day weekend I began sewing the dress. So far the process has been going well. The main problem that I'm having is gathering the organza on the bodice. It keeps on fraying, so it's not laying right over the satin. Besides that, everything is going perfectly! There's just three weeks left until the dress must be done, so the clock is ticking!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8741302207958444949.post-50248819244062647962012-01-28T02:23:00.002-05:002012-02-04T10:34:19.484-05:00Prom Dress Drawing<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here is the drawing that I made for my prom dress. I made it in Photoshop and used one of the free croqui outlines that is linked on the left-hand side. Hopefully sewing will begin shortly.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8741302207958444949.post-8435998207965248172011-12-31T00:02:00.000-05:002012-01-13T19:17:13.439-05:00Making My Own Prom Dress: Part 1<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/filebin/images/product_images/Full/M5806.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/filebin/images/product_images/Full/M5806.jpg" width="189" /></a></div>
So I've decided that it's time to begin working on my prom dress. I need the dress to be done by March because that is when the Senior Fashion Show is at my school. At the fashion show, all of the seniors wear their prom dresses and walk down the runway. Today I went to Jo Ann's and got the materials and the pattern for my dress. I'm going to use McCall's 5806 and make the white dress, but in green.<br />
<br />
At Jo Ann's I purchased a sparkly emerald green satin. I have yet to buy the chiffon because they did not have enough at the store. Either I will order it online or go to another Jo Ann's to purchase it. However, my next step will be to open the pattern and figure out if I need as much as they tell me. My budget for the entire prom is $200.<br />
<br />
Here are some celebrity dress that I'm using for inspiration:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.aisledash.com/media/2007/10/55716907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.aisledash.com/media/2007/10/55716907.jpg" width="199" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg1lIrka8fQJz-4nIyZPcYHr-6KYXGPWzP8RY1BB5Z1fwN-AjGMgVdWuaNvX3jDWA5YgJq582AtRCWIZjj_9nn8o0ha-81xxnd7fvpnRVBnxAokOAVjTCouuf6zoaRfcIY4TSeE9kBr-im/s400/amy_adams.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg1lIrka8fQJz-4nIyZPcYHr-6KYXGPWzP8RY1BB5Z1fwN-AjGMgVdWuaNvX3jDWA5YgJq582AtRCWIZjj_9nn8o0ha-81xxnd7fvpnRVBnxAokOAVjTCouuf6zoaRfcIY4TSeE9kBr-im/s320/amy_adams.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Along with the dress, I'm hoping to make a matching purse and a tie for my date. I bought extra fabric just for those purposes. I have a pattern for the purse, but I'm not quite sure yet how I'm going to make the tie. I'm thinking that perhaps I can take apart and old tie and use that as a pattern, which (hopefully!) will not be that difficult.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8741302207958444949.post-76474200388132256282011-11-25T19:41:00.001-05:002011-11-25T19:56:15.309-05:00Mood Fabric Projects<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Besides getting the fabric for Lea's dress at Mood, I also picked up this green and white floral cotton for my own use. When I bought it, I originally did not know what I was going to do with it, but then I decided to make a skirt, which I wore a lot over the summer. I used the same skirt pattern that I've always been using, New Look 6843.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.simplicity.com/images/product/medium/6356.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://www.simplicity.com/images/product/medium/6356.jpg" width="138" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I finished with the skirt, I still had some leftover fabric, so I decided to make a shirt for the first time. I bought New Look 6356, which is a really simple and basic shirt pattern. Since it was the summertime, I made the sleeveless V-neck shirt. The hardest part was making the point of the V in the V-neck because there was a lot of extra fabric bunching up there. I ended up having to cut some away.</div>

She said that she would like one, but it had to meet her clothing requirements. She only wears at least 3/4 length sleeves and high necklines. At first I was going to make a dress from a picture she showed me of Rachel Berry from Glee, but in the end I decided that it was better to just invest in a pattern. Ergo, I bought New Look 6000.<br /><br />When I brought Lea to Mood I underestimated the amount of fabric that I would need, so I didn't have enough to make the collar or the pleated side. Luckily though, there was enough for sleeves, so I ended up making View E. I used up all the fabric, but it was a good thing that I didn't make a mistake because there was no extra.<br /><br />The fabric that I made this with was a printed jersey from Mood. It was slightly difficult to work with because the edges kept on curling under. Also, I had to be careful that I didn't stretch it when I sewed or ironed it. Luckily though, since it was stretchy, that meant that there was no zipper for me to put in (yay!).<br /><br />The whole thing came together pretty easily. It was my first time sewing for someone else so that was an experience. The most difficult part of that was that I couldn't fit it on her anytime that I wanted; I had to wait until we got together. I'll admit, there were some fittings done in the bathroom of Starbucks. All-in-all though I felt honored to sew for her, and hopefully I'll use the pattern for myself sometime soon! I told you sew!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8741302207958444949.post-22968506545499243932011-08-13T18:54:00.004-04:002011-08-13T19:06:27.706-04:00Mood Fabrics<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/174/398938290_115f129b73.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 500px; height: 398px;" src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/174/398938290_115f129b73.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>
<br />Recently, my friend and I went into New York City to visit Mood Fabrics, which is the fabric store that is frequently featured on Project Runway. I wanted to go there because I promised to make her a dress, and she had to pick out the fabric. What better place to find fabric than the Fashion District?
<br />
<br />Mood was absolutely amazing! There were big bolts of fabric in every direction. I was literally gawking at everything like a tourist. There was so much selection of any type of fabric you could think of.
<br />
<br />There were three floors: upholstery and then two floors of fashion fabrics. They were even relatively reasonably priced. The two fabrics that we purchased we got for $10 a yard, which is relatively what I would pay at home. (Besides the cost of the train tickets to get into the city). Mood also had a great selection of buttons and other notions.
<br />
<br />Another great thing that I loved was seeing all the other sewers who were in there as well. It was amazing to be around people that have the same passion as I do. Overall, it was a great adventure in the city.

The dress that I decided to make has a flared skirt and cap sleeves, which are two of the options that you can make it with. I also decided to go for the slim neckband rather than the wide yoke. This pattern has a lot of pieces that you can mix and match, so there's 12 different dresses that can be made.<br /><br />Fabric-wise, I chose a navy blue gabardine. The fabric was well-suited (pun intended) to the type of dress that I wanted to make, but it was very difficult to sew with. It was very slippery, and to say that it frayed a lot would be an understatement.<br /><br />In addition to the fabric, I also added some white and blue polka-dotted ribbon that I found. I sewed the ribbon twice around the hem of the skirt and once around the waistband. I like it and think that it gives the dress a 1940's retro vibe.<br /><br />My dress was inspired by one that I saw on <a href="http://www.modcloth.com/">Modcloth.com</a>. I think that their clothes are <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIwRX5oW9E6uOwm_DjVN2pM2X5iV5-TZfTRlWqH2wLPIJGfZCn3ty9G-5QPBBYQCdNVeMGihD4q-IBjtBiai3ruzYP2PBDJhfXM0cwE7VSA1ZSvZrYS1K84ti3Br-TOl6uubrHe9qhy-Y/s1600/DSCN0642.JPG"><img style="float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 270px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIwRX5oW9E6uOwm_DjVN2pM2X5iV5-TZfTRlWqH2wLPIJGfZCn3ty9G-5QPBBYQCdNVeMGihD4q-IBjtBiai3ruzYP2PBDJhfXM0cwE7VSA1ZSvZrYS1K84ti3Br-TOl6uubrHe9qhy-Y/s400/DSCN0642.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601622803456777106" border="0" /></a>amazing, but boy are they expensive. The two fabrics are different enough that its not too obvious that they're the same skirt. I really wanted to make them in neutral colors so that they could be worn with different outfits. Here it is my new favorite dress. This is the first dress that I've made from the Project Runway patterns and I absolutely love it. This dress is actually a jumper, so when I was choosing the fabric I steered clear of plaids because I didn't want it ending up looking too much like a school uniform. Instead, I opted for this grey ribbed-jersey. Because it is so stretchy, I had to use a ballpoint needle on the sewing machine and smaller stitches.<br /><br />When I wear this dress, I always wear a belt, but I think that it would look fine without one too. I have two sweaters that I pair it with, one which goes over, and another which goes under. I think it looks good with either. This dress had really become my go-to outfit for the past few months, and I've worn it to so many dressy casual events.<br /><br />This dress was made from the Simplicity 2848 pattern. I used the flared skirt and the rounded yoke. While making the dress, I pretty much followed the directions on the pattern. I did at some top stitching, which I thought gave it a nice "finished" look. I also added in the pockets, but I'm not really liking the way they look, so I think I might sew them up and cut them off.<br /><br />I've been working on a few other projects lately, so keep an eye out for some new posts. I'll probably post on how to update old clothing next, so until then just keep sewing!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8741302207958444949.post-60385772586233830272010-07-15T19:35:00.004-04:002010-07-15T20:43:23.630-04:00New Patterns!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/simplicity/2848/2848.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 432px;" src="http://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/simplicity/2848/2848.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/simplicity/2588/2588.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 297px; height: 432px;" src="http://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/simplicity/2588/2588.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br />I have exciting news! Today I took advantage of a pattern sale at my local fabric store and bought two new patterns: Simplicity 2588 and Simplicty 2848. They're both dresses from Simplicity's Project Runway Collection. I can't wait to get started on one of them.<br /><br />Just glancing over the directions, they look much harder than the skirts and aprons that I've been making -- which is only be to be expected. I'm going to have to spend some time learning how to make the dress properly. In the meantime, I can always whip up a few more skirts, since I've been able to finish those off in about two days now. I'm hoping to make one of the jumpers from Simplicity 2848 in August, just in time for going back to school. I'm liking the one with the flaired skirt and they round neckline. The great things about these patterns is that you can mix and match the pieces.<br /><br />Recently, I've been working on another skirt from the New Look 6843 pattern. It'll be finished as soon as I hem it. I also dug up a surprise from my basement, so you'll just have to wait to see what it is! As for now, I hope that you're all doing exactly what I told you sew.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8741302207958444949.post-14811867650800782852010-05-14T16:24:00.000-04:002010-05-14T23:42:41.880-04:00Project #2: Vintage Apron<div style="text-align: justify;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDxksVwlxIYWW45YGAvtOjtFdenBTxFO1UMgum-t3rRUq0SfQ9MXvnD5SiuEVUuxMEX9Riw1R55aYTS5vUxFVi9pZ-OewUqvLgpF40IzdPqkVrfUfIe32RfC9xDr-0fdssL6_ege0rCgM/s1600/img004.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 204px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDxksVwlxIYWW45YGAvtOjtFdenBTxFO1UMgum-t3rRUq0SfQ9MXvnD5SiuEVUuxMEX9Riw1R55aYTS5vUxFVi9pZ-OewUqvLgpF40IzdPqkVrfUfIe32RfC9xDr-0fdssL6_ege0rCgM/s320/img004.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471320918960352834" border="0" /></a><br />Recently, I came across an old pattern (Simplicity 6206) that included some cute vintage aprons. I've been wanting to make a sewing smock, so I decided to make Apron 2 (bottom right corner). I love how it has big pockets, which are going to be so useful for holding scissors, spools of thread, ribbons, etc. The fabric that I used has bright and cheery stripes, which remind me of different types of candy. I also put pale pink rick-rack on the top of the pockets.<br /><br />One thing that this apron required that I had never done before was gather the fabric. This was done by making two lines of stitching at the top and then pulling the fabric down. I have to admit, it was pretty difficult! Everything was going along fine, until of course the thread broke when I was just about done. In any case, everything came together in the end, and I'm really proud of this apron.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje7Ho-OMN4oRGDf_hx5J43fTM3_1LnNK1JOHSQ9KvyVZZ1Vskx3vKC07eZb4w6tHLtQHKlvliznxsv3sMtLiSd9IXqH1ruOEFLrJAkM5skRYn40VdCla-7p8cuq4XKMdtsOqYh7-B6zCU/s1600/Internet.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 361px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje7Ho-OMN4oRGDf_hx5J43fTM3_1LnNK1JOHSQ9KvyVZZ1Vskx3vKC07eZb4w6tHLtQHKlvliznxsv3sMtLiSd9IXqH1ruOEFLrJAkM5skRYn40VdCla-7p8cuq4XKMdtsOqYh7-B6zCU/s400/Internet.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471333076464890274" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzsXwWkPJ4Ch9QIACM3xEamJwIjxhx64k9hOk1TR57g_CIrRkc27zlhiBvgXMbq6XUIoIb4NIlLjr5OQ8KYa4TynJy9k327hLzS8Yc67YuxIkZQziQYObDvIp-b2Gi1FzmbisfM7CcXBY/s1600/IMG_2804.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzsXwWkPJ4Ch9QIACM3xEamJwIjxhx64k9hOk1TR57g_CIrRkc27zlhiBvgXMbq6XUIoIb4NIlLjr5OQ8KYa4TynJy9k327hLzS8Yc67YuxIkZQziQYObDvIp-b2Gi1FzmbisfM7CcXBY/s400/IMG_2804.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471333933346572338" border="0" /></a></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8741302207958444949.post-88520406471479766902010-05-08T16:09:00.008-04:002010-05-23T18:04:06.605-04:00Project #1:Green SkirtI made this green skirt using one of my favorite patterns -- <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-2514-misses-skirts.aspx">New Look 6843</a>. I decided to go for the shorter, less-full version of the skirt to wear during the spring and summer. During my latest rendezvous to JoAnne's, I came across this green linen embroidered with white flowers, and I instantly loved it. Since it is linen, it does wrinkle pretty quickly, but the embroidery camouflages it nicely.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK4CKLDRDLEwCzpOh_yoYlEPJ6bZsqBTzQERFkOa-3DzTlxuwSEhQATvONpeWa9AIgarv0V24ut5mTziu4Pw3Q9y8B5VmbbB-cpz7G4_H5nR_AUXiFnQfA7jccdEMY5p7FDFdCdsDPlvo/s1600/Internet.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 380px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK4CKLDRDLEwCzpOh_yoYlEPJ6bZsqBTzQERFkOa-3DzTlxuwSEhQATvONpeWa9AIgarv0V24ut5mTziu4Pw3Q9y8B5VmbbB-cpz7G4_H5nR_AUXiFnQfA7jccdEMY5p7FDFdCdsDPlvo/s400/Internet.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468996033886918786" border="0" /></a>I hemmed the skirt just above my knees, which was about two inches from the original pattern. One of the problems that I did have with this, however, was trying to find a zipper that matched the color of the fabric, but in the end I opted for the closest one that I could find. The zipper is in the back, so it doesn't' show anyway. The waistband from the pattern was also too short, so next time I plan on using the waistband for the next size up just to have a little leeway when I'm putting the hook in. All-in-all, though I love the patterns from this envelope, and it was a really simple skirt to make.<br /><br />Later, I plan on making a clutch to go with the skirt from the excess fabric that I have left. I chose to match this skirt up with a white scoop-neck tee-shirt that I got from Lord and Taylor's, which isn't too dressy, and good for wearing out.<br /><br />Next, I want to sew a vintage apron to use as a sewing smock and another skirt from this envelope using some fabric that I got from China. Until then, don't forget that I told you sew.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
